To avoid being ripped off, here are 9 easy steps to follow:

1. Always comparison shop. The bigger the purchase, the more important price checking becomes.

2. Buy only from companies you know.

3. Toss all bulk-rate mail, preferably into a recycling bin.

4. Don't buy anything from anyone on the phone you didn't call. As soon as you get a call from a stranger, ask "Are you a telemarketer?" If so, request that your name be removed from their list, say goodbye, and hang up.

5. Ask about return policies before you buy.

6. Use the Internet as an easy way to research products and check prices. Buy only what you are looking for, from organizations you know, not things you happen across. Try to get local sellers to match legitimate prices.

7. If the price is so low that you can't believe your good fortune, don't believe that it is good fortune.

8. Never sign a blank contract or an agreement you haven't read. "Standard" contracts are not written with the consumer's best interests in mind.

9. Buy with a credit card that will protect you should the product or service not live up to its promise. (There are rules. Read your card agreements. Read all agreements. Even read instruction manuals. The more you read, the more you know.)
